9日という短い日程で日本中を行脚してきたグループが最後にやってきたのが「大阪府立桜塚高校」です。
It was only 9 days in Japan. They’ve been to a lot of different places with this short visit, and their last stop was “Sakurazuka High School”.

Visiting Sakurazuka HS
桜塚高校とバラード高校の最初の交流機会は2016年3月でした。私はその最初の企画から関わってきたので、今回初めてグループ旅行でバラードのみんなが桜塚高校を訪れたことに感無量でした。
これまで2017年、2018年と合わせて3回、合計10名のバラード生が短期・長期留学生として桜塚高校に来ましたが、こうして19名のグループで来る様子はまた違ったものでした。
これからもこの素晴らしい関係を続けて行ける様微力ながらもお手伝いしていければいいなと思っています。
In March of 2016, Sakurazuka students visited Ballard High School for the first time. Since I was in charge of the program, I’ve got very emotional by seeing Ballard students visiting Sakurazuka HS.
Total of 10 Ballard students have visited Sakurazuka HS before, but group of 19 students’ visit means different to me.
I have nothing very much but I’ll do my best to keep this relationship for the future.
校長先生にご挨拶 Visiting Mr. Principal
一行はまず、校長先生にご挨拶に行きました。桜塚高校にとっても嬉しいゲストです。
Ballard students visited Mr. Principal of Sakurazuka HS. It means a lot for Sakurazuka HS as well.
校長先生よりお言葉を頂戴したのち、バラードの代表生徒からお土産をお渡ししました。その後、記念撮影を取り、その後のアクティビティの準備に移動しました。
Mr. Principal gave a speech for the group. Then, 2 students from BHS made speech. They gave gift from Seattle. After taking a group photo, they moved to other room to prepare for their next activity.
授業参加 Class Shadowing
日本の学校を体験できる機会は貴重です。桜塚高校の協力で、3単元だけ、バラード生は授業を体験する機会を得られました。バディになってくれる桜塚生たちは10分しかない休みの間にバラード生たちを迎えにきたため、とても慌ただしくバディ生徒たちに連れられて各々授業へと旅立ちます。
Experiencing Japanese school’s class is very rare opportunity for BHS students. 19 Sakurazuka students helped BHS students experience the classes. Because they had only 10 minutes break in between classes, Sakurazuka students had to hurry picking up their buddy students. BHS students were taken very quickly for their shadowing activity.
*Amanda is not in the photo because her buddy student had PE (she had to change for PE cloth didn’t have time to come and pick her up), but Amanda joined PE class (watched).
いくつかの授業では、元のクラスの予定を変えて、バラード生を囲って交流できる時間を作っていただきました。
Some teachers kindly changed their lesson plan and let students talk to each other.
参加型の授業だったら少しは授業についていけるときもあります。簡単なテストもやってみることはできます。
There are classes that BHS students could join, like discussion, short test, etc.
桜塚生が一生懸命手伝ってくれてなんとか何をやっているかくらいはわかったでしょうか？わかっているのかわかっていないのか？笑顔はまあ、悪いことではないですが（笑）。
Sakurazuka students were kind enough to help BHS students understand what’s going on. I couldn’t tell if they were able to follow what was going on, but seeing smile was good.
でも、受け身な授業だとこんな風になっちゃう生徒もいましたね（笑）。まあ仕方ないですが！
However, there were classes that teachers speak most of the class period. Some BHS students looked very tired.
まあ授業がしんどいのは日本語の問題だけじゃないですから、とにかくこうして楽しい時間が過ごせたことを幸せに思いたいですね！
Language is not the only reason why classes are difficult. Let’s just enjoy valuable time in Japanese school.
お昼休憩！ Lunch Time!
授業の後はランチタイムです！過去の留学生たちが大好きだった「カツカレー」を楽しみにしていたバラード生もたくさんいました。バラバラに授業を受けていたみんなが集合して、日本の食堂を体験します。
Now it’s lunch time! A lot of BHS students who were studying at Sakurazuka HS loved their Katsu curry. Some of the BHS students looked forward to having katsu curry for lunch.
みんなで食べると美味しいね。
Having lunch with new friend is super nice.
カツカレー以外のメニューを頼んだみんなも含め、日本の食堂の味はどうだったんでしょうね？
I wonder how they liked Japanese cafeteria menu.
クラブ見学 Visit after school clubs
ランチの後は特別授業をやっていただいたり、学校見学ツアーをしていただきました。そして、放課後、アメリカの学校とはちょっと違った日本ならではの放課後の様子でもある部活見学をしました。
いろんな部活がバラード生のために色々してくれました。
After school club activities are a bit different from American schools. BHS students got opportunity to observe and experience them.
書道部は希望学生に書道体験を。
箏曲部はお箏の演奏を披露してくれました。
先日バラード高校を訪問した生徒も在籍するダンス部は彼女の計らいでパフォーマンスを披露してくれました！
Yuki who has visited BHS a month ago was in the dance club. She lead her team mates to show a dancing performance for BHS students.
とても短い、たった1日だけの訪問となりましたが、たくさんの桜塚生がバラード生をおもてなし精神で迎えてくれて、学校を挙げての受け入れ態勢に大満足の1日となった事でしょう！
The visit was very short, but a lot of Sakurazuka students were there to host BHS. I’m sure their visit to Sakurazuka HS was one of their best events in this trip.
Karaoke Party!
桜塚高校での楽しい1日を終えた一行は、その夜、日本最後のイベント、カラオケ大会を楽しみました！シアトルでもカラオケを楽しめる場所はありますが、日本のそれはやっぱり全然違います。
およそ1時間半という短い時間でしたが、バタバタと過ごした日本の旅を締めくくる楽しい時間となりました！
After spending precious time at Sakurazuka High School, Ballard students enjoyed their last event in Japan, the Karaoke party!! There are some Karaoke places in Seattle but it’s completely different in Japan.
It was only about 90min but students could spend very good moment after their intense trip going through Japan!
さて、いよいよ翌日彼らは帰国します。
Well, students have to go back to Seattle next day.
最後に At last
以上、この旅行の様子をお伝えするブログは（さらに2週間通学滞在するイーサンを除いて）これで最後です。EXSとしての一つの大きな目標であったグループ旅行の手配が無事終わり、安心するとともに、ここからが次の大事なステップになると強く感じています。
生徒たちの喜ぶ姿を見るのは本当に幸せで、この仕事ができていることを本当に幸せに思いました。
9日間というのは本当にあっという間でした。
しかし、若い彼らの”人生が変わった”と言われるような9日間だったらいいなと思います。
This is the last entry for J2J 2019 (except for Ethan’s extended part). This program was one of our goals for EXS. I’m glad that the trip was successfully done, but what we do for the next step is very important.
I was very happy seeing students enjoying time in Japan. I was very happy that I was able to work for this.
It was only 9 days. Very short, but I wish that it was their “life changing event”.
