新幹線で広島へ！ Shinkansen to Hiroshima!
慌ただしく東京での滞在を終え、お世話になった学生ガイドやホストバディにもサヨナラを言い、新幹線で広島に向かいます。
Time passed so quickly and it’s already time to say good-bye to student guides and host buddies. Now Ballard students are heading Hiroshima by Shinkansen.
アメリカから来る学生たちが楽しみにしていることの一つに新幹線での旅があります。乗ってしばらくすればときめきも減るのですが、日本らしいアクティビティの一つであることに間違いはありません！
Students from America always expect this Shinkansen ride. They may get used to it after a while but it’s obviously one of the main events for them.
向かい合わせの席にしてわいわい過ごせば4時間の移動もあっとういう間？
4 hours trip on Shinkansen is nothing with friends right?
平和記念公園 Peace Memorial Park
広島に到着後、滞在先となる旅館に荷物を置いたグループは一路、広島平和記念公園へ。
After arriving in Hiroshima, group stopped at the inn they are staying in Hiroshima and dropped their luggage. Then they visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
彼らは日本について関心があり、学んでいる学生たちなので平均的なアメリカの学生より太平洋戦争のことを知っているかも知れませんが、戦後時間が経ち、日本の学生でも当時の出来事はあまり詳しくないかも知れません。いま、私たち日本とアメリカの人たちが友好的に関係を築けていることがかつての戦争で亡くなった多くの犠牲者の上に成り立っていることをしっかりと胸に刻みます。残酷にも命を落とすこととなった学徒を祀る記念碑の前で黙とうを捧げました。
Ballard students are taking Japanese and learning more about Japan than average American students, but it’s been over 70 years since the WW2, not even Japanese young age may not know deeply about the war.
We, Japanese and American people are now in good relationship, but we must remember that’s on all the victims of the war.
世界遺産ともなっている原爆ドームですがここでも同じく、なぜこの建物が世界遺産となっているかを現場で説明し、戦争の悲惨さと、平和であることの尊さ、そしてそれを維持しなければならない今を生きる私たちについて話をしました。
The Atomic Dome is the World Heritage Site. Because of that, the building is well known, but not many people don’t know why it’s registered. I have explained why. I hav e talked how tragic the war was, how precious the peace is, and how important for us to maintain it.
ここ平和記念公園をアメリカからの学生が訪れることは実に意義深く感じます。
I strongly feel this visit is significant.
平和記念資料館 Memorial Museum
平和記念公園の一角にある平和祈念資料館も訪問し、学ぶべきことが多い施設です。
The Peace Memorial Park is also very important facility to visit. There are a lot of thing students can learn.
後世に伝えなければならないメッセージがたくさんあります。
There are a lot of messages should be passed to the next generation.
教科書だけでは学べなかったことがあります。
Learning thing that are not on the history textbook.
前アメリカ大統領であるオバマ大統領が広島を現職大統領として初めて訪れたことをきっかけに世界中がその存在を知り、注目され、海外からの訪問者数が爆発的に増えたそうです。
After President Obama visited Hiroshima, more people from overseas noticed about Hiroshima, more people coming to the Peace Park.
戦後から何十年もたちましたが、平和が当たり前ではないことを知り、そして今の友好関係が当たり前のように実現していることのありがたさを強く感じます。この素晴らしいものが永遠に続くことをただただ願います。
After decades from the end of the World War II, we have to remember the peace is not something we can have without effort, and we have to know how thankful it is to have this friendship in between America and Japan is there as if it’s so easy to have. I just wish this will last forever.
お好み焼き！ Okonomiyaki!
たくさんの大事なことを学んだ後はご当地グルメを楽しみましょう！
After learning so many important things, it’s time to eat local yummy food!
お好み焼きといえばアメリカだとどちらかといえば大阪風がイメージされると思います。しかし、広島風のお好み焼きはいつもアメリカからの来客を満足させています！
Osaka style okonomiyaki is better known in the US, but this Hiroshima style always make visitors from the US satisfy!
目の前で調理されるのももちろん楽しいですが、やっぱり美味しいのです！
It’s very entertaining that they cook okonomiyaki in front of them, but more importantly, it’s very good!
アメリカで大阪風の方が一般的に知られるのはおそらく、広島風の方が作るのが難しいからでしょう。
I guess Osaka style is better known in the US because cooking Hiroshima style is more complicated than Osaka style.
お買い物のお時間！ Shopping time!
食べるのを楽しんだ後は、寝るまでの時間、ショッピングを楽しみました。
After the dinner, Ballard students enjoyed time for shopping.
商店街をウロウロしながらいろんなお店に入ったり、ガチャポンをしてみたり、思い思いに過ごしました！
Walking around in the arcade, try some gachapons, etc. They’ve enjoyed their night!
宮島！ Miyajima!
多くのアメリカからの学生たちが大好きになる場所、それが宮島です。彼らは「Deer Island」とか呼んでこの島に住みたいと発言することも少なくありません。何が彼らを虜にするのでしょうか？正直わかりませんが、今日はその宮島に行きます。
Most of students from the US fall in love with this island, that’s the Miyajima. They often call the island as “Deer Island”. Yes, there are deer in the island. Quite a few students say that they would like to live on this island. I honestly do not know what makes them love the island, but today, Ballard students are going to the island.
路面電車とフェリーを乗り継いで島に入ります。フェリーからは海方面からの鳥居が見られます。
Reaching the island by street car and ferry. We could view famous Torii gate from the ferry.
鹿が愛らしいのですが、気をつけないと持ち物を食べられます！
Deer are adorable but watch out! They’ll eat your belongings!
神秘的で、かつ自然豊かで、そんなところがこの島の魅力かも知れません。
Scriptural, and also beautiful nature on this island. That could be the reason why the island is so loved.
ハイキングした人も、食べるのを楽しんだ人も、それぞれ思いのままに楽しんだ宮島でした！
Some enjoyed a hike, some enjoyed eating, each have enjoyed the island in their own way!
一行は昨夜と同じ旅館に戻り、午後はゆっくりと過ごしました。4名だけ、大阪でホームステイをする生徒をのぞいて！彼らは一足先に広島を離れ、夜に大阪に着きました。ホストファミリーのお迎えがあり、各々5泊のホームステイに旅立ちました！
Group went back to the same inn they have stayed last night and had relaxed time except for 4 students who are going to have homestay experience in Osaka. They took Shinkansen with me a night earlier than main group to meet with their host family. After meeting with their host family, each went their home and start their 5 days homestay!
